Water Environment Ltd developed an in-house tool to calculate the expected nutrient loading from developments in the draft Canterbury District Local Plan including new, carried forward, windfall sites and other types of qualifying development such as hotels and traveller sites. Water Environment Ltd carried out sensitivity analyses to understand the effects of water savings measures, SuDS and Wastewater Treatment Works at the district scale, as well as changes in policy and legislation to inform the draft Local Plan requirements.

In addition to advice on nutrient budget reduction policies for the draft Local Plan, Water Environment Ltd assisted CCC with advice and technical support regarding several suitable mitigation measures. These include working with Cenergist on retrofitting water savings measures in Council-owned housing, land use change opportunities, and undertaking a detailed river corridor analysis to identify and analyse parcels of land for nutrient mitigation wetlands which could be used to offset the nutrient budget for the draft Local Plan.

Natural England have been consulted on the strategy.

Water Environment Ltd continues to work with CCC as the draft Local Plan heads towards Regulation 19.
