Over many years of enthusiastic use of the playground by local families, the paths and drainage within the play area had become tired and unfit for purpose. The site is located on a hill and the self-binding gravel paths suffered from severe erosion where fast flowing surface water flow eroded channels in the path surface. Woking Borough Council therefore required a design for resurfacing and draining the playground which provided a long-term and effective solution to the existing issues.

Water Environment produced a number of options for the remedial works which were discussed with the client and with contractors during the tender process. It was decided to take forward resin-bound gravel surfacing to replace the existing self-binding gravel paths; this would provide a permeable surface to encourage infiltration (as per the existing scenario) while also delivering a more robust finish that would survive the significant footfall and water flow. In addition to the path re-surfacing, Water Environment also designed drainage features including filter drains and permeably surfaced gullies to suit the unique requirements of the playground.

Water Environment led the tendering process on behalf of Woking Borough Council, seeking quotes from several local contractors, discussing the work with them and reviewing quotes when received. Following instruction of the chosen contractor (A Jones Contractors Ltd), Water Environment regularly attended site to review progress and to inspect finished works.
