Knowle Park
Early stage works focused on flood risk, to ensure the proposals, in particular the proposed footbridges, had no adverse impacts offsite. This included a survey and hydraulic modelling of watercourse, and three dimensional modelling of the lake and proposed ground works to ensure no land raising was proposed within the floodplain.
Client: A2Dominion / Knowle Park Trust
Status: Construction complete, open to the public in summer 2023

Project details
Water Environment Limited have worked in collaboration with Surrey Wildlife Trust to assess the scheme as it has evolved. Surveys and walkovers indicated that, whilst the Littlemead Brook does exhibit some short sections of good quality in-channel habitat, reaches were identified that presented opportunities for improvement. Following extensive discussion with the Environment Agency (EA), it was agreed that in-channel improvement would be sought and this design was recently completed. New features include a two-stage channel, cut back to reduce gradients on existing near-vertical riverbanks, and the careful placement of woody debris to create flow diversity, trap sediment and provide aquatic habitat. This presents a great opportunity for improvement to the river, in addition to the significant wider ecological benefits presented by the park development overall.
Water Environment Limited and the project team worked to ensure that there are no detrimental impacts on the Littlemead Brook nor any connected ground or surface waterbodies, a full Water Framework Directive assessment was produced.
Water Environment carried out the final inspection and the new park opened to the public in October 2023.
